Everyone wants to have a well-behaved dog. This is an almost universal truth. I would have to say that more times than not, people have dogs that are wild on the leash, aggressive to dogs, or tearing up their house. Training a dog is tough, and that is often why we turn to a dog trainer to do the training for us. They absolutely can give you results but at a cost that is more than just money.
The obvious pros are the results and time that you do not have to put into training. Dog trainers are knowledgeable and can provide your dog with the training they need.
They can help dogs with severe behavior issues, or help a dog that is on the brink of being euthanized. There are many good things that come from a dog trainer.
Dog training can be a pricey investment. Depending on your dog’s needs the price can vary greatly. According to Angie’s list the average dog owner pays $448 on training. For some this is too expensive to get a well-trained dog.
Next, it might have been a pro, but it is also a con. Your dog is spending more time learning from another person. Dogs bond closely to those they spend time with, and if your dog is spending a lot of time with a trainer, then they could develop a fondness towards them.
Lastly, you are not guaranteed results. If your dog has serious fears and anxieties, a trainer may not be able to fix them. This leaves you with a dog that is still in need and your wallet a little smaller.
So what can you do if you don’t want a trainer? Is your dog destined to be rowdy? Train them yourself.
Training you own dog is one of the most rewarding activities out there. When I started training my dog, it brought me so much joy seeing her “get it”. Watching it click with her when she did the right thing.
The time I spent with her was amazing. I learned so much about her. I understood her body language and it made me a better owner. Yes, it took a lot of time to get her to be as good as she is but owning a dog is time-consuming. If you just want a dog as just another thing you own and not giving it the attention it needs, you may want to reconsider buying a dog. Dogs are a responsibility that shouldn’t be taken lightly.
By training your dog, you become a better dog owner. Dog trainers are good because they have experience with dogs, they have spent time with them and studied them. Those are the only two things separating you from being a dog trainer. So go out there and study and read up on dog training.
Start with the miracle that is the internet. If you are reading this you are already on the right track. There are tons of websites out there to help you like Dog House Journal (the one you are on now), Dogtime, and iHeartDogs.
Youtube is a great source, and investing in a dog training book or program can help too. Instead of paying $400 on a trainer, why not spend $13 for a book or $40 for an online program and do everything yourself. You can personally learn to raise your own dog, and seeing your dog act well behaved, and hearing people compliment how good your dog is will feel so much better because you know that you did it.
Don’t get me wrong, I do think that dog trainers are necessary in this world. They are important in working with dogs with behavior issues that the normal person could not deal with. If your dog is aggressive, then it is paramount that you seek a trainer. The amount of money that you could pay if your dog bites someone, plus the possibility of them being put down, should be reason enough to find help.
But if you are trying to raise a puppy, then do the training yourself. A dog’s life is short and they really wants to spend time with you, so give them that attention and train them yourself. I promise that you will not regret it.
